How a local non-profit agency gears patients up for the new season

What if you were addicted to drugs, alcohol, or any other substances? What happens to your family when you go through the process of counseling and rehabilitation? Fortunately LRADAC (pronounced Lor-ray-dack), a local non-profit agency offers several programs that could help with that.

There is one program, the Family Care Center that has a unique residential facility for mothers with substance use disorders.

Since their launch in September of this year, the Family Care Center at LRADAC has been the newest addition their their impressive lists of services. The Family Care Center aims for mothers to work towards long-term recovery and family strengthening.  With the holidays right around the corner, this marks the program's first time helping their patients celebrate the holidays.

Community Relations and Development Coordinator at LRADAC Allison Atkins has been working there for over 2 years. She responds to the question, "What is the most rewarding outcome working so closely with the Family Care Center at LRADAC?"

Atkins says, "Gift giving plays a big part of the holidays, and what we are planning to do instead of the community having the opportunity to provide the gifts instead of the mom, we are teaching and working with the moms to actually go and purchase their gifts for their children."

So on top of their normal treatment, counseling, and recovery, the Family Care Center allows these battered women to be in touch with a sense of normalcy--by enabling them to do the usual tasks and errands centered around the holidays.

A sense of normalcy...and a time to share with loved ones. That is how LRADAC is gearing their patients in the Family Care Center up for the new season.
